Hong Kong couple who suffer from cancer finally got fast and world-class medical care in our hospital
“In Hong Kong, I was told that I had to wait for two years to get a bed in hospitals.”, the couple said so when they came to our hospital for help and they couldn’t afford to wait any longer because of their progressive diseases. The good news was the MDT (Multiple Disciplinary Team) members which consisted of the experts in gastrointestinal surgery, gastroenterology and oncology of Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University completed the treatment successfully in only 10 days. The couple felt astonished and very grateful after experiencing such high-level and efficient medical services in the Mainland.
The couple, Ms. Duan and Mr. Wu, from Hong Kong had metastatic rectal cancer and colon adenoma respectively. Due to the large number of patients with gastrointestinal tumors in Hong Kong in recent years, the medical staff and beds become extremely short. They had visited a lot of hospitals in Hong Kong and were told that they had to wait for about 2 years before getting beds and treatments.
Through searching for information on the Internet, they learned that Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University had a good reputation in the field of minimally invasive surgery. Two weeks ago, they came to our hospital and found Professor Sun Huawen in the department of gastrointestinal surgery.
After asking for more details, Professor Sun Huawen learned that Ms. Duan ever had an ovarian cancer surgery a few years ago. Based on the previous medical history and current condition, Prof. Sun thought her rectal tumor might be related to ovarian cancer which made the situaiton more complicated and difficult to conduct a laparoscopic surgery. Likewise, Mr. Wu who was diagnosed with the colon adenoma was not easy to be operated with the endoscopic minimally invasive surgery because of the large tumor size.
In terms of the specific condition, the MDT group made precise treatment plans for them. Prof. Sun Huawen, Dr. Wang Qiushuang and Dr. Yu Jianxiong used laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery to treat the wife’s rectal tumor. Two days after the operation, Ms. Duan could get out of bed. And the Associate Professor Li Xiangpan from the Cancer Center gave his guidance on Ms. Duan’s postoperative radiotherapy and chemotherapy. As for Mr. Wu’s giant colon adenoma, Professor Shen Lei and Dr. Huang Xu of the gastroenterology department used endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) a minimally invasive technique to eradicate the tumor. All treatments were completed in just 10 days. Both the husband and the wife felt very impressed by the work efficiency of the hospitals in the Mainland.
Professor Sun Huawen said that the surgeons in the Mainland had acquired world-class laparoscopic surgery skills, and the operation quantity in the Mainland even ranked the world. Professor Shen Lei introduced that the department of gastroenterology of Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University was very famous for their professional ESD techniques treating early gastrointestinal tumors without extensive surgical injuries.
In recent years, with the rapid development of medical technology in the Mainland, more and more patients in Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and even foreign contries have come to the Mainland to seek for medical help. Last year, Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University treated a fair number of patients in these places.
