RenMin Hospital of Wuhan University makes a new breakthrough in the treatment of retinitis pigmentosa-dominated degenerative retinal disease
On 18 April 2022, a subjournal of Nature, Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy (IF=18.187) published online the research result "Highly sensitive and fast kinetic light-sensitive channel proteins restore visual function in blind mice" with Prof. Shen Yin, Ophthalmology, RenMin Hospital of Wuhan University as corresponding author.
Animal experiments carried out in this study have demonstrated that the use of the new photosensitive protein can improve the vision of blind mice to around 0.3, the equivalent of human vision. This also means that there is hope that patients with blinding retinal eye disease, previously thought to be incurable, can be cured.
